Select models are available with a manual gearbox, and the sedan comes with an extremely fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain. Unfortunately, every version comes with a noisy engine.
We’d go with the sporty-looking SE sedan. It comes with a manual transmission and a sport-tuned suspension that makes it much more fun to drive than the standard setup. The Corolla sedan, with the exception of the sportier SE and XSE models, is powered by a 139-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that sends power to the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). The more powerful versions have a 169-hp 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT or an optional six-speed manual transmission. While the larger engine is available in all hatchbacks, only the sedan offers a hybrid powertrain.

Our tests of the Corolla SE hatchback and Corolla XSE sedan revealed that even the most powerful engine fails to provide adequate acceleration. The Toyotas were cautious in town and steady on the highway. Hard acceleration, on the other hand, produced coarse engine sounds that reduced their refinement. Both the sedan and hatchback Corollas have a pleasant ride that adequately isolates all but the worst bumps.
The Corolla hatchback and sedan start sharing a streamlined instrument cluster and soft-touch materials on the inside. The majority of models feature passive entry and push-button start. Others can have ambient interior lighting, dual-zone climate control, and heated front seats added. Those who frequently transport backseat passengers should choose the sedan over the hatchback because it has significantly more legroom behind the front seats.
The cargo space behind the back seat of the Corolla hatchback is 18 cubic feet, but we could only fit two carry-on bags there. The new no-cost Enhanced Cargo Space option, on the other hand, increases that area by 6 cubic feet (total of 23) by replacing the spare tire with a tire repair kit. Despite having only 13 cubic feet of trunk space, we managed to fit eight bags inside.
